Sonya Bird

While living in Tokyo as an exchange student, Sonya Bird was introduced to the wonders of Japanese paper stores. "The patterns and colors of the exquisite papers amazed me and I incorporated them into oil paintings and assemblages."

The origami peace cranes fuse the decorative aspects of the papers with the message of the crane.

Through my art I hope to speak to people about the sacred life that is in us all. The peace crane mobiles let me be a part of the exchange as people share them with their friends and family. It's been a delight to imagine the cranes and their message of hope traveling around the world.
